BARQUIST Major Robert Andrew Barquist, retired, 91, of Jacksonville, died peacefully Thursday evening surrounded by his family. He was born to the late Anton Victor Barquist and Georgiana Delia Ryan Barquist on February 10, 1923 in Minneapolis, MN. After serving as a pilot in the Navy during World War II, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in business education. Robert was awarded the Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal. He also flew helicopters and planes for the National Guard and Army Reserve. Known for his love of all-things-mechanical, including VW camper vans, Bob was fondly nicknamed van man by the youth in his neighborhood. Robert is survived by his brother, G. Sheldon (Judy) Barquist, his former spouse, Angeline Barquist, and his four children: Roberta (Robert) Huckaba, Daisy Barquist, Carl (Linda) Barquist, and Cynthia (H. Martin) Chomiak. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Margaret Baldwin, Michael Huckaba, Nicholas (Danielle) Huckaba, Catherine Chomiak, Christopher Chomiak, Carolyn Barquist, Victor Barquist, Emily Barquist, Athena (Adam) Ward, and Jeremy (Kristen) Farrell.
