MCGAULEY Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Robert E McGauley died January 11, 2014 in Jacksonville, Florida. Born to Joseph and Frieda McGauley in Haverhill, Massachusetts on September 27, 1922, he graduated from Haverhill High School in 1939. After joining the Army in 1943, Bob served with the 75th Infantry Division, was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and honorably discharged in 1946 with a Purple Heart. After marrying his sweetheart, Kathryn Ryan, Bob attended Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Civil Engineering. In 1954 they moved to Jacksonville, Florida where Bob joined State Farm Insurance Companies in 1958 as an agent. After three years he was appointed Agency Manager and continued in that position for 20 years until retiring in 1980. During those years he was a charter member and past president of the Arlington Toastmasters Club and president of GAMA (General Agents and Managers Association). After retiring he loved to play golf, but especially loved to sing, as he had all his life. In WWII he was the vocalist with the Army Hospital dance band in Europe and performed in many musical productions during his military service and in college, especially favoring Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas. Bob was a church soloist all his adult life and wrote church music. He was the former choir director, a 44-year choir member and past treasurer of Arlington Congregational Church. He also had a great love of barbershop singing and sang for many years with the River City Barbershop Chorus. He leaves his son Richard (Nancy), daughters Barbara Jean Wick (Alan), Laurie Nowlin (Carrol), six grandchildren, one great grandchild and his sister Florence. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Kathryn, and two brothers, Henry and Herman. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014, 2:00pm at Arlington Congregational Church, 431 University Boulevard North, Jacksonville, Florida 32211. A military honors burial ceremony will be held on Monday, March 3, 2014, 11:00am at the Jacksonville Veterans National Cemetery.
