Thurston Edwin "Ed" TOWNS Sr. Obituary
TOWNS Mr. Thurston Edwin Ed Towns Sr., age 76, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Wednesday morning, January 22, 2014 at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. Born in Wheeler County, Georgia, he was the only son of five children born to the late Major Thurston Towns and Alice Lorena Mims Towns. As a young child his family moved to Telfair County and he was raised in a one room school house on a 2 acre square that was purchased from the Telfair County Public School System. Being the son of a school teacher, he as well as three of his sisters were destined to follow in their mother s footsteps and become teachers as well. After high school, he attended Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. While attending GA Southern, he taught as a Student Teacher in Glynn County. In 1958, after graduation, he joined the Nassau County Public School System. Mr. Towns taught Industrial Arts for many years at Yulee High School. While teaching, he attended the University of North Florida where he obtained his Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision. He later added Math to the courses he taught at Yulee Middle School. During his years of teaching, he taught in the Nassau County Adult Education Program and was an Instructor for the Rayonier Apprenticeship Program. After setting an example and serving as a mentor for over thirty eight years to the next generation of Nassau County's leaders and citizens, Mr. Towns retired in 1997. He was an avid reader that loved reading anything of historical significance. He enjoyed doing genealogical research, gathering information from the historical records in cemeteries and collecting International Harvester tractors. Anyone that knew Mr. Towns was familiar with his tractor collection and annual sugar came grinding and syrup cooking. He and his wife have been longtime members of the Yulee United Methodist Church where he held many leadership positions.
