William E. FARIS Obituary
FARIS William E. Faris, MD, age 88 of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Savannah Grand in Fernandina Beach. Dr. Faris was born on May 28, 1925 in Birmingham AL, the son of the late William Elbert and Martha Law Faris. Dr. Faris graduated from Berea High School in Berea, KY and went on to attend Emory University where he received his Bachelors and followed by attending Tulane University, in New Orleans where he received his Doctorate in Medicine. Dr. Faris served in the United States Air Force and received his honorable discharge in 1953 as a First Lieutenant (Medical). While still in the reserves, Dr. Faris served his internship and residency at Charity Hospital in LA. While at Charity Hospital, Dr. Faris met a young nurse named Sophia, and in 1951, they were married. Dr. And Mrs. Faris moved to New Orleans and in 1955, came to Jacksonville where he opened a private practice in the Riverside Community. He has served as an associate at Baptist Medical Center and St Vincent's Medical Center, Chief of Medicine and Past President of Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville. He served as associate professor at the University of Florida Medical School in Gainesville and afterward headed the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Dr. Faris returned to Jacksonville and worked for the Public Health Department before retiring in 1982. He was the first to perform modern heart catheterization in NE Florida and a pioneer in the medical field. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years Sophia Faris in 2007 and his daughter, Carolyn Faris who passed away in 2008. He leaves behind his daughters, Alynda Henley of Cumming, GA, Barbara Faris of Dennison, TX and Janet Faris of Fernandina Beach. His grandchildren, Shipp Harris, Jason Williams, Sarah Altman, Ryan Coleman, Austin Coleman, and David Brooks. His great-grandchildren, Noah Altman, Jonah Altman and Colesen Williams. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Home on with Pastor Beth Fogle-Miller officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his wife, Sophia in Bosque-Bello Cemetery after the service. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 5-7 pm at the funeral home.
