Allen D. Jr.

Allen DeVilbiss Gutchess, Jr. passed away Tuesday,

October 15, 2013, at his home. Allen was born in the old Flower Hospital on May 13, 1928 (Mother's Day), to Julia B. and Allen D. Gutchess.

He lived on Overland Pkwy. and went to a private school, K-1. His family moved to Evergreen Rd., where he

attended Ottawa Hills schools for grades 2-12. Allen

received letters in baseball (pitching) and as football manager.

Graduating after just turning 17, he enrolled at the University of Michigan three weeks later to start a full summer semester. By June of 1946, he had been a senior in high school and a sophomore in college. Allen graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering in 1949. He later received his Masters in Business Administration in 1951, also from the University of Michigan.

Allen enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He served in the Korean War as an Air Controlman. Following his honorable discharge, Allen worked full time while attending night school to earn his Juris Doctorate from the University of Toledo in 1960.

During his career as a

patent attorney, Allen prepared and prosecuted more than 600 patent applications. He was past president of the Toledo Law Association at UT from 1966-67. He also enjoyed attending Patent Law Association functions. He was a member of Phi Theta Phi Honor Fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity.

Allen was a lifelong member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the former SERTOMA service organization.

Allen enjoyed spending time outdoors, playing golf, driving through his childhood neighborhood, fishing at the family cottage in Alpena, Michigan and watching nature in his backyard at his home in Sylvania. The deer, squirrels and raccoons offered hours of enjoyment for Allen and his family. He took pride in entertaining his friends and family at dinners and holiday events at local restaurants.

Allen is survived by his children, Heather Paschall, Heidi (Francisco) Morales, Matthew Gutchess and Holly (Brian) Bolenbaugh; grandchildren, Abby (Kris) Schondelmeyer, Austin (Victoria Verdell) Wasylkowski, Alexa Wasylkowski and Andrea Bolenbaugh, and great-grandson, Mason Wasylkowski. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bonnie Luros, and half-sister Betty Crow.

Visitation will be held at Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St., Sylvania from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October, 25, 2013. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26, 11:00 a.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 W. Central Ave., Toledo. A private interment will take place following the service.
