Alvin 12/16/24 - 7/2/14
Alvin A. Berland, 89, of Toledo died peacefully under hospice care at the Wolf Creek Nursing Center, from congestive heart failure.
Born and raised in Chicago, Al attended the University of Illinois, then enlisted during World War II. He served three years in the Army Air Force as a bombardier. He returned to UI where, in September, 1946, on the night before classes were to begin, he attended a mixer dance and met his future wife, Eve Riese. They became engaged on Valentine's Day, 1947, and married in June of that year. June 29, 2014, marked their 67th anniversary.
Al transferred from UI and graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. After passing the Ohio State Board, the couple moved to Toledo in 1950, where Al practiced until 1988. His downtown practice was unique in that he was one of few who saw low-income patients whom he counseled on family matters, diet, life skills - all as the "eye doc."
He and Eve raised their two boys, traveled to far-flung parts of the world including a safari in Tanzania in 2009, played tennis until his heart attack in 1971, after which he joined the Heather Downs Country Club and became an avid golfer. He loved duplicate bridge, was a voracious reader and was liked by everyone he met.
Al is survived by Eve; his sons, Bob (Ginny) and Dan (Lisa); five grandchildren; his sister, Blanche Sudman, and his beloved miniature dachshund, Rusty.
At his request, a private memorial will be held. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 800 S. Detroit Ave., Toledo, OH 43609, or a
