Carlene Thomas passed away on December 24, 2013, in Atlanta, GA. She was born in Dry Ridge, KY to Nell and Carl Spalding. After moving to Toledo, she graduated from Scott High School and attended the University of Toledo.
Carlene had a successful career, starting as a secretary to various prominent Toledo attorneys. She later began her own public stenographic office in the Spitzer Building and she also worked as a real estate agent. Her mother owned a small hotel in Kentucky and Carlene assisted her in its operation for two years. She began working as an assistant to the president of the Maumee Valley Hospital and worked in the Comprehensive Children's Services program there. Until her retirement in 2002, she was the assistant to several of the chairmen in the Department of Biochemistry at the Medical College of Ohio.
She was a remarkable, stylish and graceful lady who lived a long and rich life. Her level of energy and engagement with the world was the envy of many younger people. She was never one to spend her day in idleness and was always ready for a trip, a dinner out, a Broadway show, a shopping spree or a winning adventure to a casino. Each year, the Kentucky Derby was always celebrated with a party.
Left to cherish Carlene's memory is her only daughter, Judith Slane of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Courtney (Brian) Gibbons; great-granddaughters, Brett and Lauren, all of Atlanta; her beloved nephew, Michael (Diane) Carr of Seattle, WA, and many dear extended family members and wonderful friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 29, from 4:00-7:30 p.m. at Ansberg West Funeral Home, 3000 Sylvania Ave., where funeral services will be held on Monday, December 30, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. To send her family online condolences, visit
