Charles A. (Charlie)

Charles A. (Charlie) Vandewiele, 95, of Lambertville, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013. He was born to the late Camiel and Honorine Vandewiele, June 25, 1917, in Detroit, but moved to Belgium as a child. He served in the Belgian Army during WWII and became a printer. Charlie married the late Rachel Biebouw in 1947 and came to the Toledo area in 1948.

Charlie was a typesetter at The Blade before becoming the longtime Secretary-Treasurer for Toledo Typographical Union No. 63. In addition, he was the Administrator for the Typographical Health and Welfare Fund and remained active even after his retirement, always available to provide counsel and assistance to his peers and their families. He was also a volunteer fireman in the City of Oregon from 1951-1961.

Charlie was devoted to his family and friends, both here and in Belgium. He loved to travel and socialize. His warm smile, positive outlook, generosity and thoughtfulness made him seem much bigger than his 5'3" height.

Before moving to Lambertville and joining St. Anthony Catholic Church, Charlie was a member of Oregon's St. Ignatius Parish.

Charlie is survived by daughters, Rita Hrivnyak (John) and Maria Horn (David); grandchildren, Chad, Kristen (Tony), Rachel and Olivia, and also by special nephew, Jean-Pierre VanRaepenbusch (Anne) of Huron, Ohio; as well as many loving nieces and nephews in Belgium.
