On April 26, 2014, Berneice and Ken Wistinghausen reached down from Heaven and enfolded their very special daughter, Christine Renee Wistinghausen, in their waiting arms. Chris died peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family and friends, while listening to echoes of her childhood... lullabies, nursery rhymes and hymns of praise to her God.
At age 53, Chris leaves behind all those who will never forget her very special smiles and the warmth only she could give! Chris lived a very enthusiastic life! Attending the Good Samaritan School in Defiance, Ohio, Chris was not only an athlete herself, but a cheerleader for her fellow students as well! Never one to be on the sidelines, she participated in Special Olympics and has had many gold medals placed around her neck! During her career, Chris has worked for Quadco of Stryker, Days Inn of Defiance and Nancy's Restaurant, Defiance. Throughout the day, no matter what job she was given, she spread joy and laughter to co-workers and customers alike! During her winters in Florida, she enjoyed gardening, bowling, swimming and playing Skip-Bo. Being scorekeeper for the Euchre and Pinochle tournaments was the highlight of her day! Chris decided she would retire when Nancy of Nancy's Restaurant decided to retire. But, being the "social butterfly" she was, she joined the Senior Retirement Program and was enjoying life to the fullest until her recent illness.
Chris will be forever remembered and loved by her two big brothers, Allen (Susan) Wistinghausen of Toledo and Thomas (Deborah) Wistinghausen of Jackson, Michigan. Her nieces, nephews, special cousins and very special friends will keep her memory in their hearts always.
Chris' friends and family are invited to visit with her from 2:00-4:00 and 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Schaffer Funeral Home, 529 Jefferson Avenue, Defiance, Ohio. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church of Defiance, Ohio, where visitation will be held one hour before the service. Interment is scheduled at 3:00 p.m. in Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made in Chris' honor to the Good Samaritan School, the Senior Retirement Program, Defiance County Hospice Association or a
. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staffs of Mercy Hospital and Brookview Rehabilitation Center for the care and kindness they extended to Chris during her last weeks.
She thinks no evil, does no harm.
Her disposition is always calm.
So full of love and kindness, too,
She only sees the good in you.
Anger, dislike - they are not real.
Such normal impulse she does not feel.
She is innocent, this is true -
Of hate and fear and things we do.
Such perfect trust is hard to find,
Exemplifies her peace of mind.
With eyes upturned and heart sincere,
Her thoughts may seem quite far from here.
A deeper knowledge, yet not expressed.
We are sure...she's wiser than the rest.
All who knew her will attest
She is our precious Down's syndrome Sis.
