Daniel Joseph Noe, age 81, of Sylvania Township, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at home. He was born October 5, 1931, to Walter and Margaret (Krupp) Noe in Toledo. Dan was always highly organized and efficient with the planning of his days and weeks. During an action-packed weekend in June of 1953 in South Bend, Dan graduated with his degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, was commissioned an officer in the United States Air Force, and became engaged to Joan Oberhausen, the love of his life for 59 1/2 years.
Following his 1991 retirement from Sun Oil Co. after 38 years of employment, Dan devoted a good part of his remaining years to charitable, community, church and civic activities. He found great pleasure in the many family holiday gatherings and traditions and especially looked forward to Grandpa Sleepovers, Father's Day Picnics, Labor Day Campouts and Noe family golf outings. Dan delighted in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren closely following and enjoying their many athletic activities. Dan could be characterized as a frugal person with simple needs but generously shared his time, talent and treasures.
While he served as a volunteer with a number of organizations, Dan especially enjoyed delivering meals for Mobile Meals for 18 years. He also helped with renovating the original Mom's House on Noble Street. Dan was a former member of Central Catholic Alumni and Friends Board where he served two terms as president and he also was recently inducted into the Central Catholic Order of the Celtic Cross.
Quality education for his children and grandchildren was always a priority for Dan and his wife Joan, and they generously provided their monetary and spiritual support of this goal throughout their lives. Dan and Joan, both devout Catholics, were very proud of the fact that all eight of their children received a quality Catholic high school education, each graduating from either Notre Dame Academy or St. Francis de Sales.
During retirement, Dan became an avid family history researcher and traced his ancestry back a number of generations. As an organizer of grade school and family reunions and an active participant and researcher in planning high school reunions, Dan played a key role in keeping memories alive and was noted for his publication of a family newsletter, "Noe Notes and News."
Dan and his wife Joan cherished their long-time relationship with friends, and they along with three other couples met once a month for an evening of fellowship and playing bridge for over 50 years.
Cedar Point roller coasters were one of Dan's greatest enjoyments. Exercise was also one of Dan's priorities as evidenced in his senior years by his participation in twice a week water aerobics classes. He loved the outdoors, especially doing yard work. Wildwood Metro Park was a favorite destination of Dan's, even when his mobility was declining, and his daughters frequently took him there in his final months of life.
Among his favorite sayings that he also lived by included -"Never start something you can't finish," "Every day is a good day- some better than others," "be a leader, not a follower," and his personal favorite - "It's a great day for the race - the human race."
Dan was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gregory Noe, and infant sister, Nancy Ann Noe. Mourning his passing are his wife of 59 years, Joan; sons, James (Lynn) Noe of Pittsburgh, PA and Thomas (Mary) of Genoa, OH, and daughters: Peggy (Paul) Wulf of Curtice, OH, Nancy (Tim) Brzozka of Toledo, Linda (Mike) McKee of Toledo, Marcia (Joe) Schoen of Toledo, and Kristen (Jeff) Dominique of Curtice, Ohio, and daughter in-law Marcia Noe of Findlay, Ohio. (Melanie) Noe of Toledo and Suzanne Ramsdell of Wallingford CT also survive.
