MUELLER

John R. "Opa"

John R. "Opa" Mueller, age 89, of Toledo's Point Place Community, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at the Windhaven Eldercare Center in Temperance, MI surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 25, 1924, in Toledo, OH to John and Mary (Schoetz) Mueller. A WWII US Army Veteran, he was a 1942 graduate of Waite High School and went on to receive his Bachelor of Education from the University of Toledo, and Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. John began his career in education as an elementary school teacher at Mason Consolidated, and as a principal at Blissfield Elementary School. He continued his career as principal for Jefferson Hurd Road Elementary School in Monroe, MI for 29 years, retiring in 1986. A caring and hardworking administrator, John rarely took summers off, but chose instead to work at the school. He was especially attentive to students with financial need, making sure they had school supplies, and of the special education students. He was a Paul Harris Fellow as a member of the Monroe Rotary Club, and one of the founding members of Monroe County Community College. He was also a member of the German American Club, and an active donor to many charitable organizations. A parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, he served as St. John the Baptist Grade School's first School Board President. John loved the outdoors, perch-fishing, sailing and boating on Lake Erie, and playing tennis in his younger years. Known for his green thumb, he maintained a beautiful vegetable garden and always canned what he grew. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many, he will be dearly missed.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Violet "Molly" (Roottier) Mueller; children, Ann DeBoe, Sue (Steve Hertle) Rhodes, Gretchen (Simon) Tijerina, John (Jeanne) Mueller and Ray (Bev) Mueller; sister, Mary Drewyor; 11 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Walter Mueller.
