Mary Lois Beltz, 82 years, a longtime resident of Waterville, Ohio died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at the Lakes of Monclova in Maumee, Ohio surrounded by family and friends. Mary Lois was born in Ashland, Kentucky to James I. and Emma Lou (Mitchell) Tichenor.
Mary Lois was married for 53 years to Robert D. "Bob" Beltz, who preceded her in death by 9 years. She is survived by a son, Charles, and a daughter, Anne; daughter-in-law, Mary Holland Johnson; two granddaughters, Ann and Amanda, and sisters, Lucy and Betty.
In her early years, Mary Lois lived in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. As a teenager, Mary Lois' family moved to Erlanger, Kentucky where her father was a teacher and then became the superintendent of schools. She graduated from Lloyd High School in 1949, and from the University of Kentucky in 1953. While attending the University of Kentucky, Mary Lois was a member of the synchronized swim team.
After her husband returned from service in the Korean War, they moved to Athens, Ohio and Mary Lois taught English in the schools of Nelsonville, Ohio. After moving to Coshocton, Ohio, Mary Lois began working in the field that would occupy most of the rest of her life, library science, when she became the bookmobile lady.
After a few years living in Springfield, Illinois and then Jeffersonville, Indiana, Mary Lois and Bob settled in Alliance, Ohio, where they remained for 18 years. Mary Lois became the librarian in the township elementary school and then in the newly constructed Marlington Middle School. After moving to Waterville in 1984, Mary Lois continued her support of education by becoming the educational coordinator for public television station WGTE. After retiring from her career in education, she worked part time for H&R Block.
Mary Lois was an avid bridge player. She was active in the Waterville Seniors, in her church choir and in church administration.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 11, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Peinert-Dunn Funeral Home, 7220 Dutch Rd., Waterville, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday July 12, 2014, in Waterville First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Karen VanderPloeg officiating. Interment will be in Mowrystown, Ohio.
