Paul Zielinski, age 56, of Toledo, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at the Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 15, 1957, in Toledo, OH to Arthur and Helen (Mizejewski) Zielinski. A graduate of Start High School and the University of Toledo, he completed his Bachelor of Science in both Chemistry and Biology, and his Masters of Education. After completing his student teaching at Woodward High School, Paul began what was to be a 30 year career with Washington Local Schools in the Science Department at Whitmer High School, where he taught Biology, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and Environmental Science. A passionate educator, he believed in hands-on lab activities. Among his many accomplishments were winning the Maumee Bay Watershed Award several years in a row, and the Longevity Award for his Water Quality Teams' annual participation in the County Water Quality Symposium at UT. Watching Paul and his students walk down the hall and out the door to a nearby creek in their wading boots, gloves, with buckets in their hands and nets on their shoulders was a common sight at Whitmer. Even the most unlikely students were motivated by Paul's knowledge, passion and enthusiasm.
In 2009, Paul was nominated for the TAWLS Outstanding Teacher Award by his colleagues. His ability to connect with students of all ages and levels was a testament to his many talents as a teacher.
Paul was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend with a wonderful sense of humor. He made people laugh and reminded us of what is important in life. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed skeet shooting at Toledo Trap and Skeet, and ran the Junior Rifle Program at Adams Conservation Club. He was a parishioner of St. Clement Catholic Church.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Marianne (Morrin) Zielinski; daughters, Carolyn and Laura; his mother, Helen; sister, Victoria (Paul) Jagielski, and brothers, Robert "Bo" (Joan) and Alfred (Kelly) Zielinski. His father, Arthur, preceded him in death.
