Pauline R. Clegg was born in Philadelphia, PA. She grew up in Philadelphia and later the family moved to Pottstown, PA, where she attended school and graduated from Swenksville High School. She graduated from Pottstown Medical Center in the Registered Nurse program. Shortly after she joined the US Navy Nurse Program as an Ensign ( NC ) USN. She spent 9 years in the US Navy, serving at the Naval hospital in Philadephia; New Orleans; Guam; Yokosuka, Japan (where she met her husband, Bill); Quantico, VA Marine base, and Newport RI. She was honorably discharged as Lieutenant USN.
Pauline and William H. Clegg were married at Quantico, VA, in 1952. After they were retired from active duty in Newport, RI, they moved to Pitman, NJ, and Pauline attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. When they moved to Toledo, OH, Pauline enrolled at Mary Manse College where she earned a BS in nursing. When she was working at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center she earned her master's degree in education (MED), and an education specialist degree (EdS) at the University of Toledo. She retired from teaching Critical Care Nursing at St. Vincent's after 21 years of service. She later joined the Toledo Board of Education teaching in their Practical Nurse Program. She retired again after 10 years, serving the last year as coordinator/director of the program. She also did volunteer work at St. Vincent's for years. She served on active duty during WWll and the Korean War. Her unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for handling battlefield casualties from Korea. Expanding from a unit with 8 nurses and 100 beds to over 500 beds during the war ( the same work performed by a MASH team). After the Korean war she had the exciting opportunity to serve on a US Navy Transport converted to a hospital ship which carried battle casualties back home on a round the world cruise to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) through the Suez Canal to Istanbul, Turkey, through the Mediterranean Sea to New Amsterdam, Holland, Germany and return to New York. Pauline was an avid bridge player and an avid golfer.
Pauline and her husband Bill were married for 61 years. Her children are William K. (Denise) Clegg, MD, and Kathleen A. (Mark Cheren) Clegg, MD, and grandchildren, Kevin, Paul, Alex, Julie, Lucy, and step- grandchildren, Mindy and Robert. She is preceded in death by parents, Mary and Alex Uhorczuk, and brothers, Steve Walker, John Walker, William Walker, and George Walker; sister, Helen Uhorczuk. Her sister Stella Uhorczuk of Washington, DC survives.
Friends will be received at Blanchard - Strabler Funeral Home (1163 W. Sylvania at Lockwood, 419-269-1111), on Monday, September 16, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 17th at 10 a.m. at Gesu Church.
