Richard G. Jeffery, age 91,

a 47 year employee of The Toledo Blade, died peacefully in his home Friday, March 7. 2014. Dick was a compassionate, generous, charitable man, who was devoted to his family and treasured his wife, Polly, whom he tenderly cared for through the several years of her declining health.

Dick was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where his family had their own music school. Dick played the organ. He imparted to his children a love of music and all the arts.

Dick served his country during WWII, as a staff sergeant with the 93rd Fighter Squadron of the Army Air Corps in the Indo-China-Burmese Theater. He was a rifle sharpshooter and carbine expert, earning the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 bronze stars. Following his discharge, he worked in Fostoria as a photographer and photo engraver and later secured his employment as a photo engraver at The Blade, a job he loved. He had his pilot's license, flying single and twin engine planes

during his younger years.

Dick enjoyed bowling, gardening, raising orchids, entertaining, reading and sharing the information he garnered from his books with family and friends. He was proud that he had read every National Geographic from cover to cover from the past 67 years. A member of the Planetary Society, he loved astronomy and science fiction and aspired to witness the manned landing on Mars. An avid golfer he was on the roster of the Toledo Retiree Golf League through 2012.

His family appreciated his playfulness, sense of humor and childlike awe at the wonders of this world.
