Robert W. "Pete"

Robert W. "Pete" Browning, age 87, passed away suddenly after a brief illness, Thursday August 22, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by his family. The son of Justus and Adelaide Browning, he was born September 3, 1925, in Toledo. He grew up in Old Orchard and was a graduate of DeVilbiss High School where he played basketball and football.

Pete graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with an Engineering degree where he participated in the V 12 military program. Following graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy.

After his service in the Navy he worked for Emery, Marker and Emery as a builder of power plants. After several years he began a long career as a custom home builder with JM Browning and Sons. Later he formed Browning and Jones with Harvey Jones and subsequent to that joined Cal Smith and formed Apple Creek Building Co. Pete had an illustrious career as a builder/developer, with projects like Sleepy Hollow, Brandywine, Wolf Creek, and Pinegrove. The bridge he designed for Sleepy Hollow in Sylvania in the early 1960's was the first covered bridge built in Ohio in over 100 years. He also built numerous custom homes throughout Northwest Ohio.

He enjoyed playing golf, fishing and was a member of The Slagle Trout Club, Belmont Country Club, Highland Meadows Golf Club and Stoneybrook Golf & Country Club (Sarasota). His lifelong hobbies included rebuilding old clocks and refurbishing Volkswagens, and later in life he became a self taught painter. He served on the Board of Sylvania Savings Bank and was a charter member of Christ Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Suzanne (Barth). He is survived by his son, Robert W. Browning Jr. (Jib) and their children Grant and Taylor Browning; son, David Browning (Claire) and their children Chris Seiple, Eric Krall, Julie Kirby, Alison Guddy and Amy Phillips; son, Thomas Browning (Nancy) and their children Blake Browning and Nicole Young; daughter, Betsy Browning Hopkins (Philip) and their children Elise and Abby; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Joan Anderson; brother, John Browning and companion, Jane Robinson.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September, 23, 2013, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 4225 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, OH with the Rev. Tom Schwartz officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 Perrysburg, OH 43551 or Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
