Raymond Jackson Obituary
Dr. Raymond Carl Jackson died Monday, April 7, 2008, in Texas.
Dr. Jackson entered Indiana University as a freshman in 1949 and earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1952 and a master of arts degree in 1953. He earned a doctor in philosophy degree from Purdue University in 1955.
He taught at the University of New Mexico, 1955-1958, and the University of Kansas, 1958-1971, where he was chair of the interdepartmental Ph.D. program in genetics. He was a member of the Biological Sciences Faculty of Texas Tech University from 1971 to 1997, serving as chairman and professor from 1971 to 1978. He was appointed to a Paul Whitfield Horn Professorship in 1980 and continued his research in genetics and cytogenetics as Horn Professor Emeritus (1997) until his death.
He was a member of the Botanical Society of America, American Association for the Advancement of Science (president of the Rocky Mountain Division, 1989-1990), Genetic Society of America, Genetics Society of Canada, American Society of Plant Taxonomist, International. Organization of Plant Biosystematics, Delta Phi Alpha (National German Honorary Society), and Chi Sigma. He received the Botanical Society of America Certificate of Merit in 1992 for outstanding contributions to cytogenetics, a Special Service Award from the Mid-continent Section of the Botanical Society of America in 1998, and the President's Award from the SWARM Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1994. He published numerous scientific articles in national and international scientific journals. He served three years in the U.S. Army Air Corps-U.S. Air Force.
Born May 7, 1928, in Medora, he was a son of Thornton C. and Flossie O. Jackson, both of whom preceded him in death. On Oct. 24, 1947, in Brownstown, he married T. June Snyder, who survives.
Other survivors include a son, Jeff, Salt Lake City; a daughter, Rebecca J. Hale, Cheyenne, Wyo.; two brothers, Roscoe and John, both of Medora; two sisters Mary Abner, Brownstown, and Maxine Spurgeon, Freetown; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Jackson
Family graveside services will be conducted in Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown, under the direction of Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home, Brownstown. Family will receive friends and relatives from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home, with graveside service to follow. Rix Funeral Directors in Lubbock, Texas, is in charge of arrangements in Texas.
The family suggests memorials to the Institutional Advancement Department of Bio-medical Sciences, Texas.
