Mary Elizabeth Bickel Henthorne Herron (September 17, 1923 March 16, 2014) Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Bickel Henthorne Herron, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died peacefully March 16, 2014 at the age of 90. Betty was born September 17, 1923 in McGregor, Iowa to Doii (Elwell) and L.P. Bickel. She was raised in McGregor, the youngest of three children, and graduated from McGregor High School. Betty graduated from the University of Iowa where she played the snare drum with the Highlanders and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In December, 1943, Betty married Captain William Henthorne. Bill served with Merrill's Marauder's and was killed in action in June 1944. Following graduation, Betty moved to Washington D.C. to work for the foreign service. She served in India for two years during which time she traveled to Afghanistan over the Khyber Pass and to Burma. After returning from India, Betty married Don Herron on July 18, 1948. Betty and Don lived in Lakewood and were happily married for 63 years. They were members of the Little Church on the Prairie for over 60 years. Don died in 2012. Betty was a wonderful wife, homemaker and outdoor enthusiast. She and Don were members of The Mountaineers and skied at Paradise in the early sixties. Together they climbed Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier and spent time hiking and backpacking the Wonderland Trail with their family. Betty was an avid golfer and she and Don enjoyed a number of golf vacations throughout the US, England and Scotland. Cycling was also a favorite activity for both which inspired them to participate in RAGBRAI (a bike ride across Iowa in July) three times. Betty also was a volunteer for Hospice and a Deacon at The Little Church on the Prairie for many years. A devoted mother and grandmother, Betty is survived by five children: Julee Herron Johnson (Steve), Chris Herron (Elizabeth), Tom Herron (Verna), Jay Herron (Judy Summerfield), Susan Herron and ten grandchildren: Craig, Kristin and Eric Johnson, Matt, Philip (Jenna), David, Chris, Katie, Sam, Maddy Herron and Amelia Kopf. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Weatherly for their warm and loving care of our mother during the last years of her life. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Monday June 16, 2014 at Little Church on the Prairie. The service will be followed by a reception in Prairie Hall.
