Patrick Allen Winkler "Papa" 1928 - 2013 Patrick Allen Winkler died on September 24, 2013. He was born on March 17, 1928 in Bowlus, Minnesota to John A. Winkler and Teresa Mrosla Winkler. He and his five siblings were raised in Minnesota. Patrick would often tell us of his many hunting and fishing adventures and hilarious stories of his childhood. When Patrick was 16 years old, his father died. His education was interrupted to work in the family hardware store. With determination, he returned to school, attending St. John's University and graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Journalism. Patrick joined the Army, and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was here that he met his future wife. Patrick and Mary W. Brennan were married in 1955 at Visitation Catholic Church in Tacoma. He joined the Tacoma News Tribune, rising from reporter to the Managing Editor, and worked there until he retired in 1984. Patrick also retired from the military as a Major in the National Guard. He and Mary made their home in Lakewood and raised seven children. His strong faith, integrity, intellect, and sharp sense of humor were defining characteristics throughout his life. With the arrival of grandchildren, Papa was the happiest, as he cherished his relationship with each child. Our family is so grateful for his love and devotion. Patrick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary, his brother John F. Winkler, his children Mary Margaret, John Brennan [Maria], Mary Katherine [Kevin], Mary Claire [Mark], Joseph Brennan [Hillary], Mary Patricia [Greg], and Michael Brennan; his grandchildren Mary, Matthew, Patrick, Michael, Timothy, John Paul, Sarah, Joseph, Thomas, Mary Therese (Tessy), Madeleine, and Caroline. A private funeral mass was held at Saint Francis Catholic Church with entombment at Calvary Cloisters.
