Ann Manns born October 19, 1916 in Loda, IL, died March 11, 2014 in Tucson. Preceded in death by sons Michael and Richard, daughter-in-law Diana, and former husband USAF Maj. (ret.) Francis Manns. Survived by sons, Peter, David and Stephen (Katie) Manns; daughters, Susan (Marc) Severson and Katherine Manns; daughter-in-law, Tina D'Amico; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Attended Mundelein College in Chicago (1935-1937) and graduated with a B.S. in Education from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 1939. Taught grades 1-8 in a one-room country school in Loda. During WWII was one of two female instructors at Embry-Riddle's aeronautical school in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she taught parachute rigging and English to Brazilian Air Force cadets. In 1945 she married USAF Lt. Francis B. Manns. As an Air Force wife, she traveled extensively with her family, permanently settling in Tucson in 1961. She received her M.Ed. from the University of Arizona in 1972. A lifelong teacher, she was employed by Pima Community College, where she taught adult education and GED preparation at the Tucson Skill Center, and facilitated the DES-WIN program for recipients of Aid to Dependent Children until her retirement in 1984. Her community involvement included Playbox Theater, founding member of SALOC, member of the Tucson Women's Commission, Executive Women's Council and We Also Served, board member of Pio Decimo Neighborhood Center and the YWCA, and docent at the Tucson Museum of Art. Memorial Mass at St. Pius X, 7651 East Pima, Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributing to a charity or non-profit of your choice.
