Dr. Charles Athans our beloved one, passed away at home July 14, 2014. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, July 3, 1925. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the US Army and served in WWII from 1943-1945. He was wounded in action during the Rome Arno Campaign in Italy and awarded the Purple Heart. Upon his return home, he enrolled at Wayne State University, after which he attended the University of Detroit, College of Dentistry, graduating with a Doctor's Degree in 1953. Charles practiced dentistry in Dowagiac, MI nine years prior to his move to Tucson in 1962. He retired in 1992. A loving husband and father, Charles is survived by his wife, Mary of 68 years; his sister, Ann Costa; five children, Sandra Cuddigan, Carol (Dana) Elmer, Marcia (Ken) Reid, John Athans and Lynn (Brad) Hoge. He also leaves eight grandchildren, Mathew (Hildie) and Shad (Crissy) Cuddigan, Jasmine (Enrique) Placito, Charles (Amber) and John (Amanda) Elmer, Mary Lindsay, Madison and Bradley Hoge and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Stella Athans; sister, Constance Kalatta and brothers, Anthony, George and Peter. Charles was no stranger to hard work. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, golfing, bowling, skiing and Bridge, through which he made many friends and will be remembered for his generosity as well as his wonderful sense of humor. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Catalina Foothills Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the or a .
