Cherie Sharp SMITH Obituary
SMITH, Cherie Sharp, passed away peacefully in Tucson, Arizona on August 19, 2013. Cherie was born September 10, 1943, in Oakland, California to James L. Sharp and Elena DeMartini Sharp. She graduated from Head Royce in 1961 and attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. On a summer European student tour she met a young man from Texas who won her heart and in 1965 she married Charles W. Reese. The couple moved to Orinda, California, while Chuck attended law school. Chuck and Cherie spent a fabulous six-month second honeymoon traveling the world filled with wild stories of climbing through Angkor Wat, cobras in Benares, and camel rides at the Great Pyramids -- which are still cherished memories for the family. Cherie enjoyed her days playing tennis with friends, throwing great dinner parties, and skiing at Sugar Bowl. Realizing they were better as friends, they parted ways, and Cherie moved to Santa Barbara in 1973. In 1980, Cherie married William P.R. Smith. They spent 33 happy years together. She was an active member of the Montecito community as an avid tennis and bridge player, and had many fabulous friends from her time volunteering for various charities, including the Lobero Theater, Humane Society, Music Academy, Children's Home Society, and the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. She and Bill traveled the globe, entertained, and enjoyed their time as members of Birnam Wood County Club and the Coral Casino. In 1998, upon Bill's retirement from real estate, they built their dream house in Tucson, Arizona. With an open door policy, many friends from Santa Barbara visited, and they had great fun meeting new and dear friends from the Tucson Country Club and Mountain Oyster Club. They enjoyed a second home in Ensenada, Mexico where they spent their summers escaping from the heat sitting by the beach. Cherie was preceded in death by Bill, who passed just six weeks before her. She is survived by her daughter, Clarissa Reese Denton, and her adored granddaughter, Olivia Reese Denton, as well as her stepchildren, Pike Smith, Stephanie McGowan, and Trent Smith. For those who knew her, Cherie was elegant, poised, quick-witted, fun, stylish, and magnetic. She will be missed, but not forgotten. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
