Elson C. Brittle Age 80, passed away on November 14, 2013. Elson was born on January 11, 1933 in Norfolk, Virginia and moved to Washington, DC in his youth. He graduated from Anacostia High School where he was a standout baseball player. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S Navy, where he served in the quartermaster corps. He later enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard where he earned a Maritime Master Pilots License. After tours in Virginia, Hawaii, New Jersey, Louisiana, New York and Maryland, he retired with the rank of CWO4 (Boatswains Mate) with 27 years of service to his country. He especially enjoyed his time on the USCGC Southwind, an icebreaker, where they circumnavigated the globe and delivered supplies to the Arctic and Antarctica. He then taught JROTC at schools in Maryland where he was the advisor to the drill teams. In his leisure time he enjoyed baseball/softball, bowling, crabbing, square dancing, golf, attending USCGC Southwind reunions and traveling the country in his RV, where he eventually settled in Tucson, AZ. He is survived by his loving wife, Marva and four daughters, Linda Johnson (Bob) and Laura King (Richard) of Maryland, Janet Blume (Bill) of Florida and Donna Jurado (ManFredis) of South Carolina and a stepson, David Lauver (Judi) of Arizona. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Temple Brittle and his daughter, Jody Andrews. A Memorial will be held at St. Marks United Methodist Church at 1431 West Magee Road, on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. He will be interred at a later date at the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church or Casa De La Luz hospice. Arrangements are being handled by HUDGEL'S SWAN FUNERAL HOME.
