Nina Carpenter Masek Born July 20, 1928, in Wayzata, Minnesota, passed away January 20, 2014 at the age of 85 at her home in Sonoita, Arizona. She is survived by husband, George Masek; children, Scott (Dianne) Anderson, Leonard (Melinda) Anderson, Gerry (Peter) McGinnis, George (Ellie) Masek, Holly (Jim) Stahl and her brother, Thomas (Nicki) Carpenter, six grandchildren and one great-grandson. Nina spent her youth in Wayzata, Minnesota, where as a young girl her lifelong love of horses began. She was educated at Miss Hall's School, Bennington College, and the University of Minnesota, where she studied creative writing. As a newlywed, she moved westward to McCloud, California, a logging town at the foot of Mt Shasta where she made many lifelong friends. In 1967, Nina married George and they moved to Sonoita, Arizona, and christened their property Grass Ridge Farm. Their home became a family special-occasion gathering place for the next 47 years. Children and grandchildren, and other family and friends were always welcome at the Grass Ridge Farm. The kitchen was the center of activity for every family holiday as she cooked up a special memory for all to cherish. Nina's lifetime equestrian interests included breeding, training, eventing, fox hunting, and most recently, driving, which continued until last year. Nina and George founded and ran the Grass Ridge Hounds and in 1968 founded the Grass Ridge Horse Trials at Grass Ridge Farm. Nina carried on her family's tradition of passion for and commitment to symphony music when she served on the Tucson Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors for many years and chaired it from 1999 – 2001. The family extends special thanks to Casa De Paz Hospice and Caregiver Rosa Miranda for the outstanding care they gave Nina. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a cancer research .
