Thomas Harry McKinney 8/20/1925 - 10/7/2012 Dr. McKinney retired as Professor Emeritus from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI in 1985. Previously, he was a Senior Fellow in Higher Education at the Academy for Educational Development in Washington, D.C. and taught accounting at The University of Michigan-Flint, the University of Oklahoma and in 1990 - 1995 at the University of Arizona. A national authority on the governance and financing of postsecondary education, Dr. McKinney did research and writing in that field and served as a consultant to state and national agencies. He served for eight years on the Accreditation Commission for the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools. Dr. McKinney was born in Oklahoma City and graduated from Chickasha (OK) High School in 1943. As a member of the Navy V-12 Program during World War II, he attended the University of Southern California. He played on the USC football team in the Rose Bowl. He served as an Ensign aboard a Navy seaplane tender in the Pacific. After the war he received an MBA in accounting and a PHD in economics at the University of Oklahoma. He was a Certified Public Accountant. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Jane of Oro Valley, AZ and their six children, Katherine Jane McKinney, Haslett, MI; Mary Elizabeth Schmidt, Holland, MI; Thomas Harry McKinney, Jr., Fayetteville, NC; Karen Sue McKinney, Easley, SC; John Raymond McKinney, Ware, MA; Helen Marcella McKinney, St. Robert, MO; one grandchild, Thomas Douglas Jackson, Goldsboro, NC and a sister, Shirley McKinney of Chickasha, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Emma McKinney and a sister, Sally McKinney. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012 at VISTOSO FUNERAL HOME, 2285 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd. in Oro Valley.
