JASPER Mary Lou Payne, age 105, of Jasper, passed away on Wednesday, August 21s, 2013, at Ridgeview Health Facilities.

She was born on January 8, 1908. She lived at St. Martin's in the Pines in Birmingham for 13 years, but she spent most of her life in Jasper. Mary Lou was born in Mandeville, Louisiana. After receiving a master's degree in biochemistry from Newcomb College, she taught at Tulane Medical School. There she met the love of her life, T.J. Payne, Jr. They were married and moved to Jasper. Mary Lou was a very active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and many civic and social organizations in Jasper including Girl Scouts, a Member of Jasper Board of Education, Nearly New, Times Study Club, and Walker Baptist Medical Center Auxiliary. She especially enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr. T.J. Payne, Jr., and her brother, Dr. Hume Thomason.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Thomas J. (Kay) Payne, III of Birmingham and Dr. Louis (Woodie) Payne of Tuscaloosa; and two daughters, Linda (John) Word of Birmingham and Lisa (Eddie) Miller of Jasper. She has 10 grandchildren, Mary Wood Beasley, Katherine Payne, Walker Payne, Jeff Payne, Lillian Trombley, Catherine Haynes, Malisa Rader, Malinda Felts, Michael Word, and Nathan Miller. She is also survived by 12 great-grand children.

Services will be at St. Mary's Episcopal Church (801 The Trace) in Jasper on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at 3 p.m. with Kilgore-Green Funeral Home directing. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Keith Lewis will officiate.

The family would like to thank all the sitters who worked with Mary Lou the last few years of her life and also the workers at Ridgeview and EverCare Hospice.
