Col. Calvin B. BLOMQUIST USAR Ret Obituary
Age 84 of Inver Grove Heights Born Oct. 7, 1929 in Minneapolis and was taken down on Jan. 20, 2014 by lung cancer. Preceded in death by parents, Guy & Grace Blomquist; sister, Jean Mason; brothers, Orlo, Willard and Ray. Survived by loving wife of 57 years, Sandra "Sandy"; children, Donald (Pamela), Cynthia (David) Johnson, Robert (Bonnie); grandchildren, Sgt. Ryan, Elliot Blomquist & Amber (Sam) Mohler; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Cal grew up in South Minneapolis graduating from South High in 1947. He attended the University of Minnesota graduating in 1951 with a BS and in 1959 with a BBA. Cal served in the military for over 37 years including the Naval reserve, Army active duty (7 INF, 32 Regt, Med Co. Korea), Minnesota National Guard (204th Med. Bn.) and the Army Reserve (5501st Gen. Hospital), retiring as a Colonel in 1989. He worked for 3M Company for 31 years. Served his community of Inver Grove Heights as a member of the City Council, Mayor and several years on the Planning Commission. Active in the American Legion Post #424, life member of the Minnesota Military Museum at Camp Ripley, charter member of the Fort Snelling Military Museum, member of the Ft. Snelling Officer's Club, F & G, Military Vehicle Preservation Assn., Mustang Club of America & Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church. Whenever he had time, he enjoyed his collection of vehicles over the years as he courted his wife Sandy in a 1953 Jaguar convertible in Colorado. He restored a M38A1 military jeep, a 151 military jeep & an Army ambulance. He then added to his garage a 1965 Mustang and last enjoyed a 2010 red Mustang GT. Funeral Service 10 AM Friday at Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, 3239 70th St., E., IGH. Visitation 4-7 PM Thursday at Roberts Funeral Home, 8108 Barbara Ave., IGH and also at the church one hour prior to the service. Private Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, Allina Hospice Care, 1055 Westgate Dr., Suite 100, St. Paul, MN 55114 or to donor's choice.
