I had the good fortune of having Mr. Townsend as a teacher while I was in the Advertising Design program at Iowa State in the early 70's. He was a kind, compassionate, soft-spoken gentleman. I appreciated Mr. Townsend's experience in the field, which he brought to the classroom. His classes had solid, relevant, practical knowledge that was invaluable after graduation. He delivered this information in a warm, caring fashion. In his own quiet way, Mr. Townsend effectively got his message across. My sincere condolences to the family.

It was Chuck's idea to start the Art Directors Association of Iowa Scholarship Fund. It was also his idea to change the name of the fund to recognize Harry Watts. He called me from Minnesota, more than once, and made his case. It took some doing, but in December of 2011 the name was changed to the Harry K. Watts Scholarship Foundation.
Since 1978, 207 students have been awarded scholarships amounting to $132,600.
I always enjoyed talking with Chuck. I continue to appreciate his work building ADAI and the scholarship legacy.
Our prayers go out for Chuck's family.
