Clair E. BRUNKOW Obituary
Age 87, of St. Petersburg, FL formerly of Mahtomedi, MN July 16, 1926 - February 8, 2014 Preceded in death by his wife, Marynona Brunkow. Survived by his children, Marcia Ruotsinoja, Caren Carlson(Brian), Nancy Nicholson, (Richard), and Rich Brunkow, (Cheryl) and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also survived by his brother, Merlin Brunkow. Clair was born on a farm in Ipswich, South Dakota, the second of five children. In 1945, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the Navy. He married Marynona Brunkow in 1948. After his term of service, he started his college education at Sioux Falls College and graduated with a degree in music in 1950. His master's degree was earned from the U of M in 1968. His first job as a band director was in Hurley, SD then Silver Lake, MN, and finally Mahtomedi, MN - the job he retired from in 1977. He enjoyed his next profession as a piano technician, tuning, rebuilding, and selling pianos to many of his former students. Clair was a servant to his community and church. He was the spokesperson representing the arts for the MEA. He often encouraged students to keep practicing their instruments in the summer and organized a summer band concert on the Mahtomedi High School front lawn. He and Marynona were very involved in church life, attending First Baptist Church of White Bear (now Eagle Brook) for many years, and then Mahtomedi Community Church. In 1987 they moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where Clair continued to persue his interests without the Minnesota snow.
