David Edmund ESSLING

Obituary Condolences

St. Paul Attorney Age 68 Born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1943. He moved to St. Paul in 1945 and later to Apple Valley where he died on November 1, 2012. David graduated from Cretin High School in 1961 and the University of Notre Dame in 1965. After graduating from Notre Dame he enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard, serving six months on active duty in South Carolina before returning to St. Paul for five and one/half years of reserve duty. While serving in the reserves, David attended the University of Minnesota Law School, graduating in 1969. During Law School and reserve duty, David worked for the Minnesota Public Defender, C. Paul Jones, interviewing prisoners and writing appellate briefs for them. After Law School, he clerked for United States District Court Judge Miles Lord and then went into private practice with his father William Essling, nephew Mark Essling, and numerous other well known and accomplished lawyers. His practice consisted of a wide variety of civil and criminal cases in both state and federal courts, including court trials, jury trials and briefing and arguing in the appellate courts. He also served part time on the Federal Criminal Defense Panel for several years, and served on the Ramsey County Commitment Defense Panel for over 30 years, representing the mentally ill and chemically dependent. During his years of practice David litigated virtually every type of legal dispute, an aspect of the job he thoroughly enjoyed. David always maintained his good nature and practiced law vigorously despite serious medical problems including bouts of dialysis and two kidney transplants: one from sister Peg and the other from brother Bill. He loved hunting, fishing, and numerous sports and competitions. He maintained good friendships and was an avid reader and writer with a nice self-deprecating sense of humor. David's main interest in life was his family and he was able to spend the last days of his life in close touch with them. He is survived by siblings, Bill (Sharon), Jim (Peg), Peg and Joe; children, Jennifer (Adam) and Paul; grandchildren, Vincent, Ava and Caitlin; and his former wife, and lifelong companion, Margaret Essling. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 4-7PM Monday at Willwerscheid Funeral Home, 1167 Grand Ave., St. Paul, 651-228-1006 followed by a Memorial Service at 7PM. Memorials to the University of Minnesota Law School.
