Obituary Condolences

Professor of journalism and mass communication at the University of Minnesota, died peacefully on February 14, 2013. He was 86. He was born in Ft. Francis, Ontario. Donald was known internationally as a leading expert on media law and ethics. He was awarded his doctorate in mass communication from the University of Minnesota in 1961, and joined Minnesota's faculty in 1965. In 1984 he became founding director of the Sihla Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law and in 1990 was named 1st Sihla Professor of Media Ethics and Law. Prior to coming to Mn. Donald served on the faculty of UND from 1953 to 1965, where he was the 1st director of an all- university honors program. Donald was the recipient of many awards for distinguished teaching, including in 2009 the U of M's School of Journalism and Mass Comm. Alumni Society`s Award for Excellence. In 1990 Donald was selected as a Senior Fellow at the Gannett Center for Media Studies at Columbia University. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Munich in Germany and the University of Lund, Sweden. Donald authored several books on media law and ethics. Don is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Sophie, a daughter Vivian Cathcart of Toronto (Francesco Perino), a son Peter (Barbara), and grandsons, Steven Cathcart, and Kevin and Geoffrey Gillmor. Is also survived by brothers, Douglas (Donna Jean) and Alan (Susan). Memorial service at Roseville Memorial Chapel (2245 N. Hamline Ave. Roseville, 651-631-2727) on Saturday. Feb. 23rd 4-5pm. Private interment. Memorials to University of Minnesota School of Journalism c/o Mary Achartz.
