James M. CATHCART Jr. Obituary
Died peacefully on November 15, 2012 at Age 96 He was born in Fargo, ND to James and Elva Cathcart. The Cathcart clan came from Scotland in 1740 and family members served in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars; Benjamin Harrison Cathcart was killed in action at Shiloh. Jim prided himself on being a salesman and a competitor, never giving up, whether in selling or in golf. He started selling ads in his Fargo high school, moving on to sell newspaper advertising; IBM electric typewriters and copying machines; and finally as an agent for Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CIGNA) for 25 years, providing life insurance and retirement plans for many Twin Cities families. Jim enlisted as an apprentice seaman in the U. S. Coast Guard in June 1942, gained commission in 1944, and served aboard LST 71 for 17 months in the Pacific, taking part in the invasions of Guam, Leyte and Okinawa. He was a member of Southview Country Club for over 40 years where he claimed to have birdied every hole on the course, plus a hole-in-one on the 18th. He said, as a 20 handicapper, that he was never a "good golfer" but he was always a "good competitor". He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Inch), whom he married in 1947, and his son, William. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Indian School Mortuary. There will be no memorial service and a private burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Fargo. Contributions may be made to the .
