Mary Elizabeth QUINLIVAN Obituary
College Dean, Lifelong Educator Died January 15, 2014 Mary was born to the late Ray J. and Elizabeth (Ryan) Quinlivan in St. Cloud, MN on October 16, 1932. She graduated from the College of St. Scholastica (Duluth) in 1954, from Loyola University (Chicago) in 1964 with an M.A. in history and from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 1971 with a Ph.D. in history. From 1954 until 1972 she was a member of the Benedictine Community of St. Scholastica (Duluth). After teaching in grade school and high school in Hibbing and Duluth from 1955 to 1962, Mary taught history at the College of St. Scholastica (1964-1974) and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (1974-1986). In 1986 she became Dean of the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. After retirement from UW-W in 1996, she relocated to Arden Hills, MN. In retirement, she thoroughly enjoyed volunteer work, particularly with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Minnesota. Mary is survived by her brother, Dennis of Yankton SD; sisters-in-law, Ann and Shannon of St. Cloud; longtime friend, Winnifred Winkelman of Arden Hills; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Richard, Robert, Roger and John and sisters-in-law, Joyce, Bernie and Jean. Mass of Christian Burial 11AM Tuesday, January 21 (gathering begins at 10AM) at ST ODILIA CATHOLIC CHURCH, 3495 N. Victoria, Shoreview. Private burial in Calvary Cemetery, St. Cloud with her parents. Memorials preferred to the Scholarship Fund at the College of St. Scholastica, Kenwood Avenue, Duluth, MN 55811 or the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Minnesota, 250 McNamara Center, 200 Oak St SE, Minneapolis 55455 or donor's choice.
