Age 72 Died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica, NY on January 23, 2014. Born October 5, 1941 in Kewanee IL, to the late Robert and Margaret (Cole) Dewey of Camp Grove, IL, Mary graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA with a B.S. in Education. She earned her Master's Degree in Special Education from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. Mary was a passionate educator, teaching elementary and special education students. She worked for 15 years with Northeast Metro 916 Intermediate School District in Minnesota and served on the board of Community Bridge, a program for adults with disabilities. Mary lived in many places including Bloomington, Mahtomedi, and Cottage Grove, MN and most recently, New Hartford, NY. Mary was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved gardening, reading, bird watching and adored her cats. She was an avid Minnesota Twins baseball fan and also enjoyed sewing, cooking and traveling in her RV. Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 50 years, Eldon DeWeerth, daughters Jennifer DeWeerth (Stephen Ellingson) and Deborah (John) Hofland, grandsons Evan and Samuel Hofland, Zach and Mesafint Ellingson, sisters Martha (Scott) Harden, Barbara (Paul) Schindler, and brother, William Dewey. She was preceded in death by daughter Rebecca (DeWeerth) Peterson. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 29, 4:00 PM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 3770 Bellaire Ave, White Bear Lake, MN 55110. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation at P.O. Box 759329, Baltimore, MD 21275, or 916 Education Foundation (supporting programs for special education students) at 2540 County Road F East, White Bear Lake, MN 55110.
