ANN RUBIN Obituary

RUBIN, ANN SCHAFFER Ann Schaffer Rubin died peacefully in her home on July 5th 2012 following a courageous battle with ALS. Ann was born in Houston, Texas on January 22nd 1954 to Orville and Ethel Schaffer. She grew up in La Porte, Texas, and worked in Texas as a graphic artist prior to moving to San Diego in 1986. She met her husband Steve Rubin soon after arriving in San Diego and they were married in 1989. Ann was a resident of Encinitas for 25 years. She volunteered and taught Hebrew school at Temple Solel in Encinitas when her children were younger, and was a team manager for the Encinitas Soccer League for many years. She was a talented artist and cook, and an astute reader and critic. Ann also loved to travel, and had the opportunity to travel to Europe multiple times in the last years of her life after she was diagnosed with ALS. Ann accepted her ALS diagnosis with dignity and grace. Instead of dwelling on the future, she learned to live for the present. The courage she showed in the face of her illness made a lasting impression on everybody who knew her. Ann is survived by her husband Steve, her children David and Mica, and her sisters Charlotte White (Gary) and Lory Graves (James). She will also be greatly missed by her large extended family and many close friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ann's memory to Helen Woodward Animal Center, PO Box 64, Rancho Santa Fe CA, 92067 (www.animalcenter.org). A private memorial service will be held in Encinitas later this month.

Ann was a special person - always willing to drop what she was doing to listen, discuss anything, never judging, always coming up with just the right thing to say. Friends like Ann are rare, and I'll always remember her kind ways. ALS may have taken your body, but not your precious spirit. May rest & peace be yours, neighbor & friend.

I will miss you my dear, brave and loyal friend. I learned many spiritual and life lessons over these last two years by watching you live with courage, grace, acceptance and love. I love you and will forever hold you in my heart.
