Allan L. Simon Obituary
Simon, Allan L. SAN DIEGO -- Allan L. Simon passed away February 28, 2014. Born March 18, 1934 in Boston, MA of Polish immigrant parents, Dr. Simon graduated from Boston Latin School and earned a B.S. from Boston University in 1955. He married Renée Gerber in the same year. Dr. Simon graduated from Tufts Medical School and became a specialist in cardiovascular radiology. In the late 1960s, he worked at the National Institutes of Health on research in pulmonary angiography, which he continued even after leaving the NIH to accept academic appointments. Dr. Simon had a distinguished academic career with professorial appointments at the Johns Hopkins University, Yale University and the University of California, San Diego. He published numerous articles, primarily in the field of angiography, pioneering techniques of in vivo cardiovascular imaging. After he left academia, Dr. Simon pursued a private radiology practice in San Diego for many years before retiring. An avid sailor, Dr. Simon enjoyed yacht racing and sailed with local luminaries Lowell North and Dennis Connor. He was particularly proud of having won the Lipton Cup on his boat, Electra, for the San Diego Yacht Club. Dr. Simon is survived by two sisters, Celia Goldenberg of Wantagh, New York and Beverly Singer of Westwood, Massachusetts. He is also survived by three daughters: Julia Simon of Davis, CA, Lulu Simon of Los Angeles, CA and Stephanie Boren of Escondido, CA. Finally, he was a loving and devoted grandfather to Sabina Simon and Franklin Boren.
