Ann Katherine Follinger Wright

1927 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Wright, Ann Katherine Follinger 02/17/1927 ~ 11/21/2013 SAN DIEGO -- Ann Katherine Follinger Wright, known as "Wow- wow" to her family and close friends, died on November 21, 2013 at age 86. She died comfortably of natural causes in Rancho Mirage, California, surrounded by her sister, all five of her children, her namesake niece, and many of her grandchildren. There are people in this world whom you either love or hate. Wow was not one of them. You simply loved her. Her personality was as big as her heart. It was not a spark but a flame, which warmly filled any room she entered with her genuine interest, finely sharpened intellect and outrageous opinions from behind that most knowingly mischievous of smiles. She kissed on the eyelids and she kissed often. She was a Matriarch: ~Mother of 5. ~Grandmother of 11. ~Great-Grandmother of 10. ~Aunt to 10 nieces and nephews. She was a Maverick: ~Helping to develop the first AIDS support program in San Diego. She was an Admirer: ~Just ask Frank Sinatra, Trevor Hoffman or Andrea Bocceli all of whom had received her roses and love letters. She was a Nun: ~Giving her life to the Convent of St. Helena in Vails Gate, New York from 1975 to 1982, but taking it back again in 1983. She was a Confidant: ~To her children, to her grandchildren and to her patients and friends. She was an Herbalist: ~Sharing what she had with that same group. Wow was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on February 17, 1927, to Margery Moon Follinger of Cranford, New Jersey, and Alfred Martin Follinger of Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was raised in New Jersey and attended high school at Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey. She matriculated to the University of Michigan in 1946 where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She interrupted her education in 1947 to marry Dudley Wright and move to California to raise their family. They lived in Palo Alto, Pasadena, Santa Ana and Tustin. They were divorced in 1965. In 1966, she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Chapman College in Orange, California. She went on to obtain her Master's Degree in Social Work from San Diego State in 1968. She worked as a social worker for San Diego County for over 30 years and was awarded the Social Worker of the Year Award in 1986. She is survived by her sister, Marnie Follinger Davies of Pasadena; her five children: Marnie Wright Barnhorst of San Diego, Kirby Wright of Denver, Joan Wright of Carson City, Polly Wright of Seattle, and Stacey Wright Renker of Indian Wells; her 11 grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; and 10 nieces and nephews. One wonders where so much personality goes when someone as extraordinary as Wow- wow passes on. Judging from the amount of uproarious laughter, the number of nearly unbelievable (but perfectly true) stories, and the outpouring of genuine family love exchanged at the foot of her hospital bed in the days before she passed, it is clear that all that personality is alive and well in those she created and touched. Wow will be buried in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the Follinger Family plot. Memorial donations may be made to the AIDS . Family and friends will be gathering in San Diego for a brunch on Sunday, November 24th. Please contact mbarnhorst@trademarkgroup.com for more information.
