Beverly Elissia Stokes Obituary
Stokes, Beverly Elissia (nee Stout) ENCINITAS -- Beverly E. Stokes, born in El Paso, Texas on February 16, 1929, died after a short illness on September 19, 2013, with her daughter Blythe Stokes at her side. Beverly was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Barbour; and survived by her daughter, Blythe; son, Brian; daughter-in-law. Kathy; grandsons, Skyler and Alex; and brothers, Alton and Robert Nelson. At the end of WWII, Beverly became a WAVE as a reservist in Vallejo, California. She met the love of her life, Barbour Cooper Stokes, Jr., on a bus traveling California Highway 99 when they sat together on their trip. He noticed immediately that she had a sewing basket just like his mother's and struck up a conversation. They dated in San Francisco before marrying at the Stokes family home in Culver City, California in 1951. Theirs was a truly happy marriage based on respect and unconditional love for each other. Beverly worked as the receptionist for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles for several years and then as the receptionist for All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena. After retirement she and Barbour enjoyed traveling to Canada and Europe. Beverly was a breast cancer survivor who treasured each day. She loved to read and to write. She kept up with friends through chatty letters. After Dad, her favorite loves were Captain Jack Sparrow and Walt Longmire (of course a cowboy)! It can be said that everyone who knew Beverly loved her and she in turn loved everyone she met. She was one of God's angels on this earth. Her memorial service will be held at 1p.m., on Saturday, November 2, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 890 Balour Drive, Encinitas, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Hospice of the North Coast are appreciated.
