Bill Opie Obituary

Opie, Bill Montee 1932 ~ 2013 LOS GATOS, CA -- Bill Montee Opie passed away July 30, 2013 at The Teraces of Los Gatos in California. Born to Albert Lee and Mary Elizabeth Montee Opie, in Sandusky, Ohio. Bill attended Sandusky schools, until he enrolled at Bowling Green University majoring in business. His education was interrupted by 2 years in the Army where he served in special services before returning to complete his studies. After graduation, married to Mary Louise Knight, Opie settled his family in Detroit. Within a few years, his father's illness required him to return to the family business, O P Craft. In Sandusky. Bill expanded the small company into a burgeoning plastics enterprise. He held many patents for his creative efforts. He was an ardent golfer and a collector of presidential memorabilia, which he donated to the Smithsonian Collection. When the business was sold Bill moved his family to Poway, CA. He became active in real estate. Divorced, in 1983 he married Selma Zarakov a professor at Palomar College. A past president of the San Diego Board of Realtors, a prominent member of the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club and an office holder in every organization to which he belonged, Bill's love of people contributed to his success. Bill and Selma established scholarships at UC Riverside, Sandusky High School, The Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club, and Palomar College. They were active member/supporters of the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. Bill loved to play games and duplicate bridge in particular. Other interests were painting, writing poetry, and travel. Bill's last nine years were spent at The Terraces of Los Gatos where he and Selma participated in community life. Bill leaves his wife of 30 years, Selma Opie, two brothers John Opie (Sue) of Pennsylvania and Oregon and James Opie (Cathy), of Portland OR, a daughter Catherine Sue Opie (Julie), of Los Angeles CA and a son Robert Lee Opie of Escondido, CA, children of his first marriage to Mary Louise Knight Opie Valentine, of Poway CA, two stepsons Milo Zarakov of Pleasant Hills, CA, and Eric Zarakov, of Guatemala, two grandchildren, Oliver Opie and Kayla Opie, and two step grandchildren Adam Zarakov and Daniel Zarakov. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 17th at The Teraces of Los Gatos at 1:30 p.m. Donations in the memory of Bill Montee Opie can be made to the Hospice of the Valley, 4850 Union Ave., San Jose, California 95124.

Sylma,We were so sorry to hear about Bill's passing. I am still in Rotary here in Rancho Bernardo and I announced the sad news to the club. We have always been so grateful for your gift to our foundation and have given many scholarships to deserving students. Bill was a good friend and we missed you both when you moved. I hope you are well and please know that you have our deepest sympathies.

To Selma and family -
I was so saddened to open my local Rancho Bernardo paper today and read an obituary notice on Bill Opie.

I really liked him and admired his dedication to his profession. He was our REALTOR that showed us around the North County when my husband, Joe and I first came to visit San Diego. We had to determine if we wanted to make the move from the Midwest and after spending 2 days with Bill we knew this was the place for us. Bill was so sweet to us, funny and down to earth. We spoke about how we were both from the Midwest. We felt like he was really interested in us making the best decision for our family and not just to make a sale. Joe and him "just clicked" and he was an excellent agent. At the time we even went back to his place for a drink to celebrate us placing an offer on a house which was accepted. That was over 30 years ago - must have been right before he met and married you, Selma.

And then who would ever think that 7 years later Bill Opie and I would meet up again at RE/MAX RB when I was hired by Bill Simmons to be his office manager. Again, Bill Opie and I "just clicked" as co-worker friends and shared many good laughs together. What a dear man. He will be remembered fondly.
Our deepest sympathies to you and your family.

Dear Sylma, Bill was one of the first people we encountered in the Real Estate business when we moved to Rancho Bernardo. A man of great integrity and caring. Our prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. God Bless, Bill and Carolyn Rarity

Bill was among the finest people to ever grace the planet. He was brilliant, caring, generous and hilarious. He taught me more about business, about myself and about life, than I ever learned in a classroom. I love you , Bill. Thanks for sharing part of you with all of us!

My dear Selma, My heart goes out to you in your time of loss. I will remember Bill for so many reasons but most of all for the love he had for his fellow man. May he rest in peace and find some great bridge games in his new home, someday I will be blessed to have him for a partner again.

It has been a number of years since Bill was active in San Diego Real Estate, but he had a major impact when he was. I sometimes think of the days when San Diego County had 11 Associations of REALTORS and an MLS in San Diego, El Cajon, South Bay, San Diegito...plus smaller MLSs in La Jolla, Point Loma, and Coronado...each with its own lock boxes. In the late 1980s, Bill was a force behind the creation of a countywide lock box system for San Diego County, and he was instrumental in the creation of one of the largest regional MLSs in the country in 1991, Sandicor.

Personally, Bill is one of the people who got me involved in leadership at SDAR. I served on Bill's Executive Committee in 1991. He appointed me as a CAR Director that same year, where I served for 20 years. He was a successful and well respected REALTOR member of the San Diego County real estate community, and a friend who I always looked forward to seeing.
