In Loving Memory of DONALD JEROME "JERRY" HUNTER who passed away September 28, 2012.

I am very sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. I visited briefly with him only a few days before, when I was at his nursery. When ever I was at 'Rancho' I tried to say 'Hi' and have a few words with him. He was always kind and generous. Each time I learned something. I have known Jerry for probably about 40 years, and in one of our conversations, he said he knew me "when I was a little brat". He knew me when I was a toddler running around the nursery on Rosecrans. So 'he knew me', before 'I knew him'.
Jerry built a remarkable and amazing, 'one of a kind' nursery in our back yard, Rancho Santa Fe. I hope 'Rancho' continues to bring us interesting and unusual plants. I will miss him for sure.

I have known Jerry for a long time, probably near 40 years. He had developed an amazing nursery in our back yard, Rancho Santa Fe. Before that he had a smaller nursery in north P.B. - west Soledad area. Always had interesting and unusual plants. When ever I was to the nursery I would try to have a few words with Jerry, always learned something, very kind and interesting. I also know he 'knew me' before I 'knew him'. He worked for my father, way back when "I was a little brat" on Rosecrans. I'll miss him for sure. I hope the family is able to keep Rancho Soledad growing in the future.

My husband and I met Jerry about 25 years ago. We always enjoyed going to the Nursery, and chewing the fat with him. I wandered through the Nursery last week, and it was very surreal. I felt his presence. RIP Jerry and may God bless your family.

Dear Carolyn, Loving family members, and adoring friends. I was saddened to here of "Jerry's" passing. I met Jerry thirty-eight years ago on the tennis courts of Rancho Bernardo. Yes ,we shared the common love and hate of the game of tennis!!! Playing in double tournements, and on his beautiful family tennis court in Ramona, was such a pleasure, and boy we did have fun. Fond memories and laughs are countless!!! It is my distinct pleasure to have had the opportunity to have known such a special person. Much love to the family love Bubba.

We always counted on Jerry's fantastic plant materials for so many of our wonderful projects-many of them in Las Vegas, where we have worked with Jerry's company on so many special destinations. His generosity and genius set him apart! Our prayers and thoughts are with his family.

Jerry gave me my first job after graduating in horticulture from Cal Poly in 1984.He took me out to lunch to interview me and said "you can start in June when you are finished at school". About 3 months later I showed up for work and he said "who are you?" I said "you hired me last spring, remember?" he said "oh that's right, go work on the canning pile". I worked for him for 3 years and learned more than I ever did at Cal Poly. Thanks for the great experience Jerry! I'm sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to Dawn, Heather and family.

We met Jerry more than 10 years ago when we installed our first yard. A nursery on Kauai recommended we visit his nursery. He talked us out of our grandiose ideas what tropical palms we wanted since they would not have made it here. When we moved we dug most of our palms out and took them along to our new digs. One of Jerry's hybrids, Wood Veitchia Is a remarkable palm, even Don Hodel from UCLA marveled at the Palm. Jerry invited us to visit the Hilo growing grounds. He always stopped to chat even though we hardly were big customers. We met many wonderful people at the nursery and will miss his presence and advise. Peter and Gabi Noll

Jerry was a mentor to me - I was starting a landscape design business, and my father, Mac Cason, introduced me to him. My father, at the time was Chief Architect for UCSD, which was just starting. Joe Yamada also toured the Pacific Beach location. Jerry showed me around the place and told me what to suggest on my plans, and helped inspire me to 'get it right' in design. A visit to him and Rancho Soledad was a real treat in the business of landscaping - his knowledge, his humor, his capability, and his genuine sense of caring and teaching me was, and is, irreplaceable.
I will put a Raphis in my house in his honor - God Bless and Keep him....
Love to all - David Cason
