Donald Riefe Campbell Obituary
Campbell, Donald Riefe 1922 ~ 2013 ESCONDIDO -- Donald R. Campbell passed peacefully away on September 2, 2013 in Arcadia, OK. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Bonnie. He is survived by his four sons and daughters-in-law: Ron and Linda, Don and Karen, Bob and Jan, John and Eleana; as well as his grandchildren, Brian and Jessie, Sarah, John, Brandon, Kevin, Hayley and Matt, Christopher, Matthew, Kaitlin, Michael and Collin; and just missed the birth of his first great-grandchild, Iris, born September 4. Don was born on November 22, 1922 in Mason City, Iowa to Harold and Esther Campbell. He was the youngest of three, behind his brother Bob and sister Dorothy (Teeter). After serving as an Army medic (109 Evac) in Europe during World War II, Don returned to graduate from the University of Iowa with a business degree. He was soon hired by Pontiac Motor Division of General Motors, married Bonnie Mae Beckman of Hampton, Iowa, and moved to Omaha to start a career which lasted 30 years ending with his retirement in 1979. Upon retirement, Don and Bonnie moved to Escondido where they quickly immersed themselves in the community. In 1985, Don and Bonnie founded Heart to Heart Volunteers. For 15 years, this incredible and dedicated group of volunteers provided support and education to North County heart patients, their families, and the medical community. Don was a simple man who enjoyed simple pleasures and was never for a loss of words. These words generally came in the form of a joke, a story, a tease, or a colorful comment and always accompanied by an expression, a smile, and laughter. Don's humor was legendary and his love of family and friends was first, foremost and endless. He left us all a life time of incredible memories, laughter, and love that will be cherished and shared for generations to come. He will be missed and held forever in our hearts.
