Donald T. Drain Obituary
Drain, Donald T. CARLSBAD / FALLBROOK-- Retired Lt. Colonel Donald T. Drain passed away peacefully at his home in Carlsbad, Calif., on Friday, June 21, 2013. Don was born in San Diego, Calif. A Navy brat, he was raised throughout the U.S., China and Philippines. He graduated from Fallbrook High School at 17 years old, and then spent a year in the South Pacific. Don enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and was accepted into the Aviation Cadets. He received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1954 as an Aircraft Observer (Radar Operator). Three years later, he earned his pilot's wings and flew F-86's and T-37s as an instructor pilot. He served a 2 ½ year tour in Iran as the flying training advisor to the Imperial Iranian Air Force. He flew A-37s in Viet Nam in a Special Operations Squadron. In his spare time, Don earned his Master's Degree from Mississippi State University. He retired from the Air Force in 1974. In civilian Life, Don worked as a Financial Aide Officer and Facility Manager at California School of Professional Psychology and at California Western School of Law. Through the years, he served faithfully in his local churches and became the President of his Optimist Club. He was also actively involved in his daughters youth soccer serving as club President of the Solana Beach Soccer Club, in addition to obtaining his license to referee. In 1996, Don retired and moved to Carlsbad. During his retirement, Don donated 12 years and over 2000 hours to the City of Carlsbad, participating in the Carlsbad Senior Volunteer Patrol Program. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, JoAnn Drain. Don is also survived by his two daughters, Darlene Drain and Tamara K. Morton (Drain); and numerous grand-dogs. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, June 29th at the North Coast Calvary Chapel in Carlsbad.
