Edward L. Harris Obituary
Harris, Edward L. SAN DIEGO -- Edward L. Harris, 83, of San Diego, CA, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2013, at Silverado Senior Living in Escondido, CA. Edward was born in Huntsville, Alabama on July 8, 1930 to the late Elbert and Evie Harris. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he spent most of his childhood. Following his graduation from high school, he worked for the Convair aircraft manufacturer where he assisted in the installation of the Atlas Missile Project. In 1964, he left the Atlas Missile Project due to admission into the Escondido Police Department as a police officer. While on the police force, he furthered his education and received his Bachelor's in Criminal Justice and his Master's Degree in business. He also performed as the Post Leader for the Escondido Police Explorer program. As a result of his dedication, he retired from the Escondido Police Department at the rank of Lieutenant. After retirement, Edward moved back to his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. After constructing his own home, he pursued a career as a contractor. A well-rounded man with many positive attributes, Ed was known for his honesty, fairness, and passion toward every adventure he embarked upon in his life. Ed was confident in his abilities and rightfully so - he could always find a way to make something more efficient. It was a great talent. His well-roundedness led him to an eclectic array of professions following his retirement. He also prepared income taxes, and gave back to his community. He helped veterans collect available stipends from the Aid and Attendance program, and was a dear member of the Masonic Lodge, where he achieved the level of master. After retirement, he greatly enjoyed traveling. He owned a motor home and loved seeing the world around him. Many of his trips took him to Canada, Mexico and all 50 states. Ed had a great sense of humor and was fearless. He once rode with a group of fifth grade students across the state of California from the Colorado River to the Pacific coast proudly wearing "Buzzard Bait" written on his helmet. On several occasions, he also hiked in and out of the Grand Canyon. Another hobby of Ed's was researching the genealogy of his wonderful family. He is survived by his loving companion of twenty years, Linda Wolfenden; children, Steven Harris, Eric Harris, Edward A. (Penny) Harris, Deborah (Jeff) Teed, Mike Wolfenden, and Shannon (Shane) Nelson; brother, Robert (Lynn) Harris; grandchildren, Nathaniel (Lauren) Harris, Amaris (Bert) Duncan, Gabriel Harris, Chris Teed, Brad Wolfenden, Cory Teed, Logan Nelson, Nick Wolfenden, and Tyler Nelson; and great- grandchildren, Samantha Duncan, Timothy Duncan, Hannah Harris, and Emmalee Harris. He was preceded in passing by his wife, Jean Harris. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 30, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Clairemont Lutheran Church, 4271 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego, CA, with a reception immediately to follow in the Social Hall of the church. Ed will be privately laid to rest at El Camino Memorial Park, San Diego, CA.
