Dr.  G. Richard "Dick" Wheelock M.D. Obituary
Wheelock MD, G. Richard "Dr. Dick" DEL MAR -- Born May 3, 1926 in Safford, Arizona, Dr. G. Richard "Dick" Wheelock MD passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Del Mar on February 18, 2014. Dr. Dick was a U.S. Naval WWII veteran and upon return he attended the University of Arizona. He earned his medical degree from Baylor University in 1953 and married Mary Elizabeth McDaniel. They moved to Del Mar, founded the Del Mar Medical Clinic, and raised a family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years and 4 children, Michele Pitts, M'Liss Defrancesco, Theresa Sandefur and G. Richard Wheelock, Jr., as well as his 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Del Mar's doctor retired in 1991 and soon thereafter co-founded the St. James/St. Leo's Medical Clinic providing free care to the needy of North County. Dick was a charter member and past president of the Del Mar Rotary Club and he served on the Board of MAEGA for over 20 years. He will be missed by many: family, friends, patients, colleagues, and his Thursday bridge group. A viewing for Dr. Wheelock will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7th, at El Camino Mortuary at 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd. in San Diego, CA 92121. Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 8th, at St. James Catholic Church, 625 South Nardo Avenue in Solana Beach, CA 92075. Celebration of life at Tony's Jacal to follow at 2:00 p.m., 621 Valley Ave., Solana Beach, CA 92075. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a Wheelock scholarship for MAEGA.
