John Edmund "Jack" Duffy Jr. Obituary
Duffy Jr., John Edmund "Jack" SAN DIEGO -- John Edmund Duffy, Jr., 94, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter on Sept. 3, 2013. He leaves his wife Dorris of 70 years, sons Patrick, Tim, Daniel, and daughter Kate (Bob), and 3 grandchildren, Matt, Ben, and Erin. Jack attended UCLA before serving in WWII and finished his degree at UC Berkeley after the end of the war. As a navigator in the Air Force, Captain Duffy flew B-17's and B-26's in both the Pacific and European theaters. Flying over 100 missions, he earned a Silver Star and a Distinguished Flying Cross. Jack was an integral part in the growth of Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA). A computer pioneer, he developed one of the first software programs for airline reservations and ended his career there as Vice President of Systems Development and Data Processing. Many airlines, including Southwest Airlines, relied on his computer expertise. Upon retirement, Jack and Dorris enjoyed Air Force reunions, traveling, cruises, and trips to Rock Creek in the Sierra Nevadas. He also enjoyed taking family and out-of-town guests to Casa de Pico in Old Town, where the mariachis all knew him by name. Jack will always be remembered for his brilliance, his dry sense of humor, his generous spirit, his interest in traveling and other cultures, his love of animals, and his passion for the Sierras. Thank you, Dad. Upon his request, there will be no service.
