John Herbert Bottomley II Obituary
Bottomley II, John Herbert 09/20/1921 ~ 06/25/2014 LA JOLLA -- John Herbert Bottomley "Jack" was born in New Jersey in 1921 to Harold and Grace Bottomley and grew up in Merchantville. He attended Culver Military Academy and enlisted in the Navy immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served on the destroyer USS Lowry and manned a large gun mount. After the war, Jack worked in the family's textile mill in Camden, NJ. In 1943, he married Constance Candee who he met in La Jolla on vacation. They had two sons, John and James. He and Connie moved to La Jolla in 1953 where he raised his sons and daughter Jennifer. He worked at Bottomley and Harrah Manufacturing Co and at National Steel and Ship Co. Jack was an avid sportsman throughout his life. He was a semi- professional baseball player and exceled in football, swimming and sailing in his younger years. Later his passions were for body surfing, racing sailboats and golf. He played his last round of golf at the age of 92. He and Connie loved traveling and socializing with their many long- time friends in La Jolla. Jack was predeceased by his wife of 63 years and his grandson Curtis. He is survived by his three children, seven grandchildren, Warren, Erin, Jeffrey, Ryan, Courtney, Kristen, and Megan, and six great- grandchildren, Curtis, Brody, Mia, Mack, Sofia, and Isabella. He was truly loved for being a kind, gentle spirit and he will be greatly missed. A private family ceremony will take place in July.
