LEO BURTIS HEATON Obituary
HEATON, LEO BURTIS February 2, 1923 to December 29, 2012 Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle passed away at the Paradise Valley Manor where he lived for nearly 12 years after suffering a stroke. He died from complications of pneumonia. Leo was born in Vernon, Texas, to Hugh and Dora Heaton. The family moved to California in 1938 where they settled in National City. Leo attended Sweetwater High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track and earned the nickname "lean, lanky, leaping Leo." After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as an electrician during World War II. After the war, 1946 and 1948, he attended San Diego State where he played football. In 1946, he was honored as an All-Conference tight end by the California Collegiate Athletic Association. In 1948, he was the team leader in receiving. He worked as an electrician for civil service and took an early retirement after 20 years. He then worked for Global Electric. He then spent his retirement years playing the game of golf that he loved until his stroke in 2001. He spent many years golfing at the Bonita golf course where he won the President's Cup and enjoyed having two "holes-in-one." Leo is survived by his beloved wife, Fern, of 63 years; his three daughters, Cheryl (Dan) Dole, Candace (Rick) Austin, and Cynthia (Mike) Roberts; five grandchildren, Michael Dole, Patti Ewert, Jessica Austin, Tommy Sewell and Melissa Berg; and his four great grandchildren, Rylie and Jackson Ewert, Isabella and Alyssa Sewell, Kendall Berg and one more on the way. He is predeceased by his parents Hugh and Dora Heaton, his two brothers Wilbur and Harvey and his two sisters Cleo (his twin) and Velma. Services will be held Monday, January 7, at 1:00 p.m. at the Community Mortuary, 855 Broadway, Chula Vista.
