La Verne was born on August 30, 1922 on a farm in Elkmount Township, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, near the small village of Fordville. She attended elementary school in Fordville for the first grade; then in a one-room rural school for the next six years - where she listened and absorbed all the knowledge imparted to all students in the eight grades being taught; she skipped the 6th grade. She graduated from Fordville High School in May, 1939, second in her senior class. She worked at the local school for several years, after graduation, under the National Youth Administration program and also for a local trucking firm, as well as helping her parents and grandparents with farm work. She moved to San Diego in March, 1942 where she obtained employment in one of the defense plants, Consolidated Vultee Aircraft, as a department clerk. In July, 1945 she began employment with The City of San Diego as a general clerk-typist and advanced over the years to account clerk, senior clerk-typist, and in March, 1958, was appointed Assistant City Clerk. She remained in this position for almost 20 years, supervising from 21-30 employees; conducting city elections, and recording and processing actions of the City Council, retiring in December, 1977 after more than 32 years of service to our City. La Verne married Erhard "Joe" Miller, an employee of General Dynamics Convair Division for 37 years. They were married on May 5, 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church, San Diego. The Miller's transferred their membership to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Pacific Beach in December 1960 were they became active members. She spent hours making quilts, lap robes and baby blankets for the Mission Workshop Circle of St. Paul's Church Women. She was an avid gardener, reader and correspondent. La Verne spent hours gathering family genealogy for 40 years. Friends will treasurer La Verne's memories as they use one of the many "hot pad holders" they were gifted for birthdays and holidays. She is survived by sisters, Bernice and Shirley, and brothers, Robert and Allan, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces and many friends.
