BALSER, MERRILL EUGENE Merrill Eugene Balser of Vista, California, passed away at his home on Friday, October 19, 2012, of complications of diabetes. Merrill was born on September 12, 1929 in Akron, Ohio. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Paul and Esther Balser, and his sister Evelyn Frederick. He was the loving husband of Jane Balser. He is survived by Kevin Balser, (son); Gretchen Balser, (daughter); Stacy (Roger) Campbell; (daughter), and Jane's children, Michael (Jan) Johnson, (son); Terry Johnson, (son); Desi (Tracee) Gamboa, (son); Jesse (deceased) (Karen) Gamboa, son; Cinda Sarian, (daughter), 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Merrill graduated from "Green" High School in Canton, Ohio in 1947. He served in the Army at the end of World War II and was discharged on March 13, 1948. He later moved to Granada Hills, California and attended Redlands College for his B.A. and Pepperdine College for his M.S. Merrill was an aerospace engineer and worked at Goodyear, Douglas and Lockheed Aircraft, and for various school districts in California. He enjoyed genealogy, and flying glider and power aircraft. He was a dedicated member of Lighthouse Christian Church of Oceanside and a long-time volunteer for Hi-Cap, Medicare Counseling, at Carlsbad and Oceanside Sr. Centers. Merrill joined the fraternity of Free & Accepted Masons in Loyalty Lodge No. 645 in Akron, Ohio in 1953 and at his passing had been a member of the Masonic Fraternity for 59 years. He was a Past Master of Granada Hills Lodge No 378, and a member of Oceanside-San Dieguito Masonic Lodge No. 381, and Temecula-Catalina Island Lodge No. 524. He was an active member of the York Rite Masons, Scottish Rite Masons, and the Shrine. He was a past presiding officer of many Masonic organizations including: Royal Arch Chapter, Cryptic Council and Knights Templar; San Diego Priory of the KYCH; San Diego Conclave Red Cross of Constantine; San Diego York Rite College, Killarney Council Knight Masons, and the Allied Masonic Degrees. Some of his many honors in Freemasonry include: The Hiram Award, the Royal Arch Masons and the Cryptic Council Meritorious Service Awards, the Knight York Cross of Honor, and the Order of the Purple Cross. He was also a member of Camp Pendleton Chapter National Sojourners and Heroes of '76; the High Twelve Clubs, The Royal Order of Scotland and the Robert the Bruce Association, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Order of Amaranth. Masonic Memorial Services at 2 p.m. on Wed., November 7th, at the Oceanside Masonic Center, 511 Eucalyptus St, Oceanside, CA 92054, (760) 757-2626. Religious Services will be officiated by the Lighthouse Christian Church of Oceanside, CA. Military honors will follow with assistance from the Alvin Myo Dunn Post 365 Vista American Legion.
