Melvin Crawford Obituary
Crawford, Melvin VISTA -- Melvin Crawford, 84, died peacefully at his home in Vista on July 3rd, 2013. Mel was born July 29, 1928 in Minneapolis. At 18, he was an Army Veteran of World War II, and during the Korean Conflict he served four years with the Adjunct General's Office in Heidelberg Germany. Shortly after his discharge from the service, he moved to Southern California, safe from the Minnesota winters he despised. While working at Hughes Aircraft in 1954, he met Rose Eckenrode, the love of his life. They were married in December of 1954, moved to Torrance, and raised four children. Although Mel worked to live, he never lived to work. He retired at age 52 from the County of Los Angeles, and spent the rest of his life living his dreams with Rose. They traveled around the country until their youngest son left for college, and then sold their house and moved aboard the Ramblin' Rose, a Polaris 36' sailboat which they sailed together down the coast of North America, Central America, and through the Panama Canal to Florida. Shortly after their return to Southern California, they moved to an old farm house in Vista. Mel maintained his love affair with sailing, keeping a boat at Oceanside Harbor. He lived his life with humor, intelligence, quick wit, and a passion for family, football, fairness, and human rights. Mel is survived by Rose, his soul mate and wife of 58 years; his children, Leslie and her husband Lee, Ann and her husband John, Gary, and Ron; his sisters, Nancy and Harriet; four beloved grandchildren, Annelise, Ellen, Daniel, and Peter, who were the joy of his life; and many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the loving care provided by the Continuous Care team at Seasons Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to MECA, the Middle East Children's Association.
